Newcastle shut down training ground amid outbreak fears

Newcastle United’s squad have been told to stay away from their training ground following an outbreak of coronavirus.

Following last Friday night’s 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, manager Steve Bruce revealed that three individuals had tested positive for the virus and were isolating at home.

Another two individuals returned positives tests prior to Sunday, which lead to another round of testing on Sunday.

The club are still awaiting the results of that round of testing.

The Newcastle squad were given the weekend off and no training took place on Monday or Tuesday, with the club assessing the situation on a day-to-day basis

Another round of testing is due to take place on Wednesday with Newcastle due to face Aston Villa at Villa Park in the Premier League on Friday night

National Assembly plans to regulate social investment programmes

There are strong moves by the National Assembly to regulate the social welfare and intervention programmes of the Federal Government.

A bill seeking the regulation is already slated for second reading at the House of Representatives.

The proposal is titled, ‘A Bill for an Act to Establish National Social Investments Trust Fund to Alleviate Poverty among Vulnerable Nigerian Citizens through Targeted Programmes for the Aged, Infirmed, Unemployed and Students; and for Related Matters.’

The National Social Investment Programme is currently domiciled with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development.

The bill was sponsored by Hon. MANSUR SORO, representing Darazo/Ganjuwa Federal Constituency in Bauchi State.

The Speaker, FEMI GBAJABIAMILA, had earlier in May 2020 said the parliament would soon introduce a bill that would define who a poor Nigerian is and how to benefit from the Federal Government’s NSIPs.

Federal Government files terrorism charges against leader of Aswani international market in Lagos

The Federal Government has filed terrorism charges against the leader of Aswani International Market in Lagos, Chief TAOREED FAROUNBI, and six others.

In the three counts filed before Justice MUSLIM HASSAN of the Federal High Court in Lagos, FAROUNBI and his co-defendants were accused of conspiring and participating in acts of terrorism, leading to the killing of two men, DEBO OLOHUNYO and CHIBUZOR DANIEL, in the White Sand area of Isheri-Osun, Lagos State on March 19, this year.

The prosecution also alleged that the defendants unleashed mayhem, leading to the destruction of many properties in the area.

The prosecution said the defendants acted contrary to Section 1(2) (a) of the Terrorism Prevention Act 2011 as amended by Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act 2013.

Listed as FAROUNBI’s co-defendants are Alhaji OLUSEGUN AKINDE, AYOKUNLE FAKIYESI, IDOWU AKINDE, MUSILIU OLADEJO, LEKAN MATTHEW, and ADELEKE AKINDEJI.

Newcastle close training ground due to corona virus outbreak

Newcastle United’s training ground was closed on Monday as the Premier League club attempts to deal with an outbreak of coronavirus.

Manager Steve Bruce said on Friday that three players and one member of staff had tested positive. There have been reports of further cases at the club over the weekend.

Newcastle would not confirm whether training would take place on Tuesday.

Bruce’s side face a trip to Aston Villa on Friday.

After his team’s 2-0 win at Crystal Palace last Friday, Bruce admitted the situation had been “difficult to manage”.

Midfielder Isaac Hayden missed that match with illness, while captain Jamaal Lascelles, winger Allan Saint-Maximin, forward Andy Carroll and defender Emil Krafth were reported injured.

The Premier League has reported 10 new cases of coronavirus this week, to Sunday, but does not say at which clubs they were diagnosed.
