2020 Tennis Season Review

The 2020 tennis season was a shortened one, but there was enough time for historic achievements and stunning upsets.

NOVAK DJOKOVIC won a record-breaking eighth Australian Open title, while RAFAEL NADAL claimed an incredible 13th Roland Garros crown.

The king of Clay moved up to 20 Grand Slam titles, level with great rival, ROGER FEDERER.

There was a rare major title for someone outside the "Big Four" as DOMINIC THIEM picked up his first Slam with victory at the US Open.

The women's field produced two new Grand Slam women's singles champions with SOFIA KENIN winning the Australian Open and Polish teenager, IGA SWIATEK powering to a shock French Open crown.

Japan's NAOMI OSAKA won the US Open, her third major title.

The coronavirus played its part, unfortunately wiping out a big chunk of the calendar, including Wimbledon, but we did manage to get in some fantastic tennis and witness the likes of NADAL, DJOKOVIC, SWIATEK make more history.

CAN Warns The Presidency Against Twisting The Homily Delivered By Bishop Kukah

The Christian Association of Nigeria in the 19 northern states and the FCT has warned the Presidency and the Muslim Rights Concern against twisting the homily delivered by the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto Diocese, Bishop MATHEW KUKAH on Christmas day.

This is also as the Catholic Church described those attacking the Bishop as agents of evil.

KUKAH had in the Christmas message titled, 'A nation in search of vindication', accused the President of nepotism, noting that BUHARI was deliberately sacrificing the dreams of Nigerians to institutionalise northern hegemony.

The cleric's statement attracted sharp criticisms and condemnations from the Presidency and MURIC.

But in a statement in Kaduna, the Northern CAN defended the cleric, noting that the message reflected the currently reality across the country.

The statement authored by the Vice Chairman, Northern CAN, Rev. JOHN HAYAB, said the association was shocked at an attempt by the Presidency and MURIC to twist the message and warned against such.

The Ministry Of Aviation Considers Banning Flights From Countries With High Rates Of Covid-19

The National Assembly and the Ministry of Aviation are considering banning flights from the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries with high rates of COVID-19.

The Chairman Senate Committee on Aviation, Senator SMART ADEYEMI, who stated this in an interview in  Abuja, said a  decision on the issue would be announced next week.

The Federal Government's plan may not be unconnected with pressures on it to stop further spread of coronavirus by banning flights from nations with high rates of the virus.

Recall that the President of the Nigerian Medical Association, Prof INNOCENT UJAH, had in an interview,  said travelers from the UK and the US were worsening COVID-19 cases in Nigeria.

Although the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 had on Thursday imposed fresh requirements on passengers from the UK and South Africa, flights from the two countries were not banned.

The PTF only opened registers for travellers from the two countries because of deadlier strains of coronavirus discovered there.

F1 Season Review 2020

As was the case with many other sports, 2020 was a strange year for Formula One due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The season was originally scheduled to begin in March, but it didn’t get underway until July.

Despite all the changes, one thing remained constant- the dominance of Lewis Hamilton.

It was another record-breaking year for the British superstar, who matched Michael Schumacher’s record of seven world titles, beating the German’s 91 career race wins in the process.

Behind Hamilton was teammate, Valtieri Bottas, as the pair completed yet another Mercedes 1-2.

Max Verstappen had another fine year, finishing just nine points behind Bottas in third.

Give that man a better car and he will surely become a world champion.

Mexican, Sergio Perez also impressed in his Racing Point, winning the Sakhir Grand Prix en route a fine fourth-place finish in the drivers’ standings.

His reward is a seat on the Red Bull, alongside Verstappen, next season.

Other notable performers included Ferrari’s Charles LeClerc, who outscored his more celebrated teammate, Sebastian Vettel by an incredible 65 points.

There was that scary incident towards the end of the season, when Sebastian Grosjean’s car went up in flames, but thankfully, the driver escaped with only minor injuries.

It was a strange season, but it still gave us lots of action, and plenty to talk about.

Bring on 2021!
