Messi Double Fires Barcelona To Third

Lionel Messi scored twice as Barcelona beat Athletic Bilbao to go third in La Liga.

Athletic took an early lead through Inaki Williams, but teenager Pedri equalised with a header soon after.

Messi, who also hit the post twice, then scored when he collected Pedri's backheel and shot past Unai Simon.

A powerful first-time shot from Messi made it 3-1 and Barcelona held on for the victory, despite a late 20-yard strike from Athletic's Iker Muniain.

The win takes Ronald Koeman's side above Real Sociedad and Villarreal; they are five points behind second-placed Real Madrid and seven adrift of leaders Atletico Madrid, who have two games in hand.

British Prime Minister Announces Total Lockdown In England

Nearly 56 million people in England will return to a full coronavirus lockdown, possibly until mid-February, to try to cut spiraling infection rates.

According to Prime Minister BORIS JOHNSON, the measures, which include the closure of primary and secondary schools, will come into effect Wednesday, after Scotland announced similar measures would come into force from midnight on Tuesday.

Some 44 million people or three-quarters of the population of England are already living under the toughest restrictions, as Britain grapples with one of the worst mortality rates from coronavirus in the world.

But they have failed to halt an upward trend in positive cases, which have been blamed on a more infectious new variant.

Police Investigate Ogun Commissioner, Insist Victim’s Family Can’t Withdraw Sexual Harassment Case

The Police Command in Ogun State has said it would proceed with the investigation into the allegations of sexual harassment against the Commissioner for Environment, ABIODUN ABUDU-BALOGUN.

The Police Public Relations Officer of the Command, DSP ABIMBOLA OYEYEMI, disclosed that the Commissioner of Police, EDWARD AJOGUN, had ordered that the case be transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department at the Police headquarters in Eleweran, Abeokuta, the state capital.

The PPRO said the command will go ahead with the case despite the fact that the victim’s family had officially withdrawn the case against the Commissioner.

OYEYEMI said the father of the victim has no locus standi to tell the police that he is no longer pressing charges against the Commissioner because he is not the person that was directly involved in the case.

Federal Government Again Increases Electricity Tariff By Over 50%

The federal government has again approved an increase in electricity tariff payable by electricity consumers in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, approved over 50 per cent hike in electricity tariff payable by customers of the 11 Distribution Companies, DisCos.

A Multi Year Tariff Order (MYTO) signed by the new Chairman of NERC, SANUSI GARBA, on December 30, 2020, showed that the new tariff increase took effect on January 1, 2021.

The new increment is coming barely two months after the implementation of the controversial hike proposed last year.

In the new order, NERC said it considered the 14.9% inflation rate rise in November 2020, foreign exchange of N379.4/$1 as of December 29, 2020, available generation capacity, US inflation rate of 1.22% and the Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) of the power firms, to raise the tariff.

The order is effective till June 2021 while a Cost Reflective Tariff (CRT) expected to raise the new cost higher will be activated from June to December 2021.
