Court Grants N2M Bail to VDM After Arraignment for Wearing Police Uniform

The Chief Magistrate Court in Abuja has granted N2 million bail to social media critic Martins Otse, known as VeryDarkMan, following his appearance in court on Thursday for allegedly wearing a police uniform without permission. The FCT Police Command, which announced the case on X, led the prosecution after a viral video showed VeryDarkMan dressed in Nigeria Police Force attire and claiming to be “CSP VeryDarkMan” and the “number one online police officer.”

In its statement, the police emphasized its commitment to safeguarding the integrity of official symbols and preventing unauthorized usage. The statement added, “Martins Otse is appearing in court today for impersonation, relating to the unauthorized use of NPF uniforms in a viral video,” with the FCT Command overseeing the case.

VeryDarkMan’s lawyer, Deji Ayedanju, confirmed that the court had set conditions for his release, requiring two sureties, each with an N2 million bond. The sureties must also provide identification, submit utility bills, and reside within the Abuja municipal jurisdiction. Additionally, they must deposit their international passports, and the prosecutor will verify the sureties’ addresses. The defendant and sureties are also required to sign an affidavit ensuring his appearance at all trial proceedings.

Police to Arraign Activist VeryDarkMan on ‘Impersonation’ Charges

The Nigerian Police Force (NPF) is set to arraign social media activist Martins Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), on Friday over allegations of impersonation. The issue arose after VDM appeared in a viral video wearing a police uniform, humorously introducing himself as the "chief superintendent of police (CSP) of the online division."

In response, the police launched an investigation to determine the source of the uniform and any authority under which the activist acted. Announcing the court appearance on X (formerly Twitter), the NPF stated, “VDM, whose real name is Martins Otse, is scheduled to appear in court today for impersonation-related charges stemming from the unauthorized use of Nigeria Police Force uniforms in a viral video.”

The FCT Police Command is leading the case, emphasizing the NPF’s commitment to protecting the integrity of its symbols and preventing their misuse.

VDM had previously apologized, clarifying he did not intend to impersonate the police. “I didn’t intend to impersonate the police in any way and offer my sincere apologies to the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector General of Police,” he said. He also advised the public to seek formal approval before using any item resembling law enforcement attire, stressing the importance of permission to prevent misuse.

Police Detain Social Media Influencer Verydarkman After Responding to Invitation

Popular social media influencer Martins Otse, known online as Verydarkman (VDM), has been detained by the Nigeria Police Force. His lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, shared the news Thursday night via a post on his Facebook page, explaining that the detention occurred after VDM honored a police invitation.

Our client, VDM, has been detained after honoring a police invitation,” Adeyanju wrote, adding, “VDM has consistently said the Nigerian Police are our friends, even when we know they are not.”

VDM’s detention may be linked to a recent incident involving his use of a police uniform in a viral social media video. Last week, the Nigeria Police publicly condemned the unauthorized use of its uniforms and accessories in the video posted by VDM.

Bobrisky Removed from Amsterdam-Bound Flight

A trending video on X shows popular social media personality Idris Okuneye, widely known as Bobrisky, being escorted off an Amsterdam-bound KLM flight on Thursday night. Earlier, Isaac Fayose, brother of former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose, had shared a photo with Bobrisky on the same flight, bound for London, with the caption, “Look who’s on the same flight with me to London, @Bobrisky222.” However, Bobrisky was later removed from the flight by airport officials.

Following the incident, Bobrisky took to Instagram, alleging that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was behind his removal and detention. “Nigerians help me, EFCC just arrested me. I’m badly injured,” he wrote, sharing the news with his followers.

The incident adds to a series of legal and social media controversies surrounding Bobrisky. Recently, on October 22, he was intercepted at the Sème border while allegedly attempting to flee the country. His legal troubles trace back to an April 2024 court ruling, where he was sentenced to six months in prison for naira abuse by the Federal High Court in Lagos.

In addition to these incidents, Bobrisky faces further scrutiny following the release of an audio recording in which he allegedly claimed he was permitted to serve his prison term outside Kirikiri due to “influential connections.” He also allegedly accused EFCC officials of accepting a N15 million bribe to drop money laundering charges against him. EFCC, denying these claims, initiated an investigation into the allegations. EFCC’s Director of Public Affairs, Wilson Uwajaren, confirmed that the agency is thoroughly examining the accusations, and if found false, Bobrisky could face additional charges for misleading the commission.

"There is a provision in the EFCC Act against giving false information, which could lead to a trial," Uwajaren stated, adding that a dedicated panel is handling the investigation and will release findings upon completion.

The case underscores the legal complexities surrounding Bobrisky, who remains under close surveillance by the EFCC amidst the ongoing inquiry.
