October 17, 2022 ASUU: Varsities Hold Emergency Meetings On Resumption

Following the suspension of the Academic Staff Union of Institutions' strike, it has been discovered that public universities across the country had scheduled special senate council meetings in preparation for tests and resumption. 

According to the PUNCH, ASUU declared on Friday, October 14, a suspension of the strike that began on Monday, February 14, 2022.

The union's National President, Prof Emmanuel Osodeke, stated in a statement that the strike was called off due to a court ruling, but that the government has yet to satisfy several of its requests.

Colleges are planning special meetings to discuss new academic calendars to replace the one that was disrupted by the hurricane.

The University of Benin has scheduled a special senate meeting for October 18, 2022, according to a memo seen by our reporter.

"The vice-chancellor, Prof Lilian Salami, has agreed that the meeting of the provost, deans, and directors be convened in the senate chambers on Tuesday, October 18, 2022," according to the document, which was signed by the institution's Deputy Registrar, M.I. Owie.

According to a message from the Federal University of Lafia, the senate council will convene on Monday (today), with the focus on "reviewing the academic schedule."

Other universities that have announced Senate Council meetings include Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife on October 18, 2022, the Federal University of Technology in Owerri on October 17, 2022, the Federal University of Dustin-Ma in Katsina on October 17, 2022, and the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture on October 17, 2022.

Meanwhile, other universities, such as Sule Lamido University, have urged students to return to class as soon as possible.

The university administration "encouraged students to continue back to school" in a statement to students and employees.

Tai-Solarin University of Education, the University of Port-Harcourt, the University of Calabar, and Bayero University Kano are among the other schools that have declared resumption.
