April 11, 2025 Amorim Stands by Onana After Lyon Setback: ‘Mistakes Are Part of the Game’

Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim stood by goalkeeper Andre Onana after the shot-stopper’s errors led to a 2-2 draw against Lyon in the first leg of their Europa League quarter-final on Thursday. Onana faced heavy criticism before the match, with former United midfielder Nemanja Matic labeling him “one of the worst” goalkeepers in the club’s history, sparking a verbal spat. Lyon fans added to the pressure, jeering Onana every time he touched the ball.

Onana’s night started poorly when he failed to stop Thiago Almada’s free-kick, handing Lyon the lead. Despite United fighting back with goals from Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee, Onana’s late blunder allowed Rayan Cherki to snatch an equalizer in the dying moments.

“Mistakes happen in football,” Amorim said post-match. “We play so many games, and errors can creep in. There’s nothing I can say to Andre right now that will make it better. Our focus has to be on the next game to turn this around.”

While United remain unbeaten in Europe this season, Amorim admitted the late goal dampened spirits. “The dressing room was silent, and that’s not a bad thing. A draw away in Europe is tough, but the team’s hurting, and we need to shift that mindset,” he said.

With a Champions League spot—and its financial rewards—hanging on Europa League success, United face a critical second leg at home. “It’s 50-50,” Amorim predicted. “Lyon’s a tough side, but with our fans behind us, we play like we’ve got an extra man.”

Teenage defender Leny Yoro, who scored his first United goal after leaving Lyon’s Paulo Fonseca’s Lille side, remained optimistic. “We know away games like this are crucial. A win would’ve set us up perfectly, but we got the draw. We’ll give everything to win at home,” he said.

Lyon’s Cherki, however, issued a warning. “We were the better side and could sense their fear from the start,” he claimed. “United sat back with two defensive midfielders—that shows they’re wary of us. We’re ready to go there and win.”
