Nollywood star Lilian Afegbai recently took to Instagram to express her surprise and frustration after a friend in Lagos quoted her a steep price for wedding aso ebi fabric—in U.S. dollars, no less. In her post on Wednesday, Afegbai revealed that she was floored to see the fabric priced at $1,200.
The actress didn’t hold back, questioning the trend of Nigerian brides charging exorbitant rates for their wedding attire. “Are you all now selling aso ebi in dollars in Lagos?” she wrote. “You’re pricing your own wedding in dollars? This is getting out of hand.”
Afegbai went on to share how she initially thought the cost was a mistake. “A friend sent me her wedding invite, and I was thrilled for her,” she explained. “I checked the date to make sure it worked with my schedule, then I saw the price—1200. At first, I assumed it was in Naira and wondered if she was doing some kind of giveaway. But then I clicked the link and saw the dollar sign. I was stunned.”
Doing the math, she calculated the cost in Naira—$1,200 multiplied by an exchange rate of 1,600—leaving her speechless. “How many millions is that? For your own wedding and your ‘I do’? Is it my ‘I do’? This isn’t right. Everyone needs to calm down—there’s life after the wedding.”
Afegbai’s candid take has sparked conversations about the rising extravagance of weddings in Nigeria, urging a return to moderation.
