Governor Chukwuma Soludo issued a bold challenge to opposition parties in Anambra State on Monday, asserting that he sees no credible contender to challenge his re-election bid in the upcoming November 8, 2025 governorship election. The former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) governor expressed unwavering confidence in his administration’s performance and the support of the people.
Speaking during a media chat marking his third anniversary in office, Soludo claimed that Ndi Anambra the people of the state widely agree that his party, the All-Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has delivered tangible democratic benefits. He argued that this track record justifies granting APGA another term in the state’s leadership.
Soludo emphasized a unique political loyalty in Anambra, noting that while residents may support various parties in national elections, they consistently rally behind APGA for governorship and local government positions. “When it comes to the governorship election, I’ll be on the ballot,” he stated. “I ask: who else is running? Which party is putting forward a candidate? So far, I haven’t heard of any serious contender—unless someone drops from the sky.”
The governor acknowledged receiving calls from supporters urging him to seek a second term but clarified that the decision rests with APGA. “The party must agree and provide me the platform,” he explained. Reflecting on his tenure, Soludo described his governorship as a deliberate mission to serve and improve the state. “I applied for this job because I believe it’s my way of giving back to God’s blessings serving and leaving Anambra better than I found it,” he said.
He added that if APGA nominates him and the people of Anambra whom he referred to as his “employers” renew his mandate, he would consider it a profound honor to continue serving.
Anambra is among the eight Nigerian states where governorship elections occur off-season due to past legal disputes and court rulings. Other states in this category include Bayelsa, Edo, Ekiti, Imo, Kogi, Osun, and Ondo. As the 2025 election approaches, Soludo’s bold stance sets the stage for a closely watched political contest.
