Senate President Godswill Akpabio has accused Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central of twisting facts and misrepresenting the Senate on the global stage. Akpoti-Uduaghan, recently suspended for six months due to Senate rule violations, raised her grievances at the United Nations Inter-parliamentary conference in New York on Tuesday, alleging victimization, sexual harassment, and abuse of power by Akpabio.
Addressing the issue during Thursday’s Senate plenary, Akpabio condemned the senator’s actions, claiming she sought to tarnish the upper chamber’s reputation with a false narrative. He praised federal lawmaker Kafilat Ogbara for stepping in to correct the record, noting that Ogbara had informed foreign media that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s account diverged significantly from the Senate’s actual proceedings.
“She twisted the facts and escalated the issue internationally, embarrassing the Senate with a misleading story,” Akpabio remarked. “I commend Hon. Kafilat for setting the record straight with the global press, highlighting how different the senator’s claims were from reality.”
Akpabio pointed out that Akpoti-Uduaghan had initially submitted a petition to the Senate but bypassed its review process, opting instead to pursue legal action and international attention. “Such behavior might deter politicians from appointing women to prominent roles,” he warned.
Speaking after receiving a vote of confidence from his peers, the Senate President encouraged lawmakers to stay committed to their legislative duties and steer clear of distractions that could undermine their work. “I’m grateful for your support through this vote of confidence. Let’s keep our focus and avoid unnecessary disruptions,” he concluded.
