February 27, 2025 Lagos Assembly Crisis: Speaker Meranda’s Security Aides Removed

All security aides attached to Speaker Mojisola Meranda of the Lagos State House of Assembly have been withdrawn.

Reports indicate that as of Thursday morning, police officers and other security personnel assigned to the Speaker were removed. While it remains unclear who authorized the withdrawal, a source close to Meranda confirmed that she is now without security protection.

“All the Speaker’s security aides have been withdrawn, along with those attached to the House of Assembly,” the source said, expressing concern over her vulnerability.

The development comes amid speculation that Meranda may resign from her position as Speaker. This follows high-level interventions by senior figures within the All Progressives Congress (APC), including former Osun and Ogun State governors, Chief Bisi Akande and Aremo Olusegun Osoba.

A mediation panel led by Akande and Osoba met with key stakeholders, including members of the Governance Advisory Council, at the Governor’s Lodge in Marina last Sunday. Reports suggest the panel is recommending the resignation of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa, with Meranda also expected to step down to allow a new lawmaker from Lagos West to assume House leadership.

Meranda’s spokesperson, Ganzallo Victor, confirmed the security withdrawal, stating, “We don’t know why the authorities took this action, but all her police officers and security aides have been withdrawn. She is on her own at the moment.”

Meanwhile, a source close to Obasa revealed that his security aides have now been reinstated. “As of this morning, all Obasa’s security details have been restored,” the source said.

The situation continues to unfold, raising questions about the future leadership of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
