February 2, 2025 Tragic Road Accident Claims 30 Lives on Benin-Ore-Ijebu Ode Expressway

The Ondo Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that 30 people lost their lives in a devastating road accident that occurred on Saturday evening at Onipetesi community in Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State. The tragic incident happened on the Benin-Ore-Ijebu Ode Expressway.

According to reports, the victims were burnt to death after two commercial buses collided head-on and burst into flames. The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr. Samuel Ibitoye, revealed that preliminary investigations indicate one of the buses was driving against traffic, leading to the fatal crash.

“Thirty people lost their lives in the accident. Twenty-eight were burnt beyond recognition, while two initially survived but later succumbed to their injuries on the way to the hospital,” Ibitoye stated.

An eyewitness account confirmed the severity of the accident, explaining that the collision resulted in an immediate fire outbreak, leaving no chance for escape.

“We heard a loud crash and rushed to the scene. The vehicles were already engulfed in flames, and some passengers were struggling to get out. Unfortunately, by the time FRSC officers arrived and took the only two survivors to the hospital, they also didn’t make it,” the eyewitness recounted.

The FRSC has once again urged motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic rules, and avoid reckless driving to prevent such heartbreaking incidents on the expressway. Road safety authorities continue to emphasize the importance of adherence to traffic regulations to save lives and prevent unnecessary tragedies.
