January 30, 2025 Many Feared Trapped as Two-Storey Building Collapses in Anambra

A two-storey building under construction collapsed on Wednesday evening in Awka, the capital of Anambra State, leaving many people trapped.

The structure, located along the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway, caved in while workers were still on-site.

Eyewitness Charles Umeh reported seeing about five men working on the roof before the collapse but was unsure how many were trapped. Another witness confirmed that the project engineer, identified as Stanley, was among those caught in the debris but was later rescued.

Anambra State Police spokesperson, Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident on Thursday morning, stating that officers led by the divisional police officer of the Central Police Station in Awka had been deployed to the scene.

“So far, we have rescued two workers, and they have been taken to the hospital. No lives have been lost, and the victims are responding to treatment,” he said.

The police have invited the site engineer and the building owner for questioning as investigations continue. Attempts to reach the executive secretary of the Anambra State Emergency Agency, Paul Odenigbo, for comments were unsuccessful.
