A tragic petrol tanker explosion on Saturday in Enugu State has reportedly claimed numerous lives, with scores injured and several vehicles destroyed in the inferno along the Ugwu Onyeama Federal Highway.
Eyewitnesses described the horrifying scene, with one tanker driver recounting the devastation.
“There was a major tragedy this afternoon at Ugwu Onyeama Federal Highway. A tanker carrying premium motor spirit (PMS) lost control on the hilly road, spilling its contents,” he said.
“Unfortunately, the spilled petrol caught fire, engulfing vehicles on the road and burning many people beyond recognition. As of now, over 10 people, including children, have been burned beyond recognition. Bodies have been taken to the morgue in batches, while the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment."
The eyewitness added that the fire made the road impassable, leaving travelers stranded.
"The fire extended along the road leading to Agu-abor, making the second lane unusable. I am currently stuck in Ngwo. It’s a tragic situation," he lamented.
Authorities are yet to release an official statement, but emergency responders are on the scene, working to contain the situation and assist victims.
