January 22, 2025 Chris Brown Sues Warner Brothers Over Documentary Alleging Rape

American singer Chris Brown has filed a $500 million lawsuit against Warner Bros. Discovery, accusing the company of defamation and emotional distress over a 2024 docuseries that portrays him as a serial abuser.

The series revisits Brown's 2009 assault on Rihanna and other allegations of violence against women. Brown’s legal team contends that the documentary misrepresents events, includes fabricated details, and was deliberately sensationalized for profit, all while ignoring legal outcomes and critical context.

The lawsuit alleges Warner Bros. failed to conduct thorough fact-checking and refused to provide Brown an opportunity to share his side of the story. “This case is about the media prioritizing profits over the truth,” the complaint states. “They knowingly relied on discredited sources to perpetuate false narratives, portraying Mr. Brown as a serial rapist and abuser, despite his lack of any convictions for sex-related crimes.”

Brown’s lawyers argue that the documentary has caused significant harm to his career, reputation, and personal relationships. They claim Warner Bros.' actions amount to defamation, negligence, and intentional infliction of emotional distress, with the singer seeking $500 million in damages for lost opportunities, reputational damage, and emotional suffering.

Warner Bros. has yet to respond to the lawsuit. However, the docuseries has faced backlash from fans and observers, some of whom have accused it of exploiting Brown’s past controversies. Brown’s legal team has vowed to hold the network accountable, labeling the series a "calculated and malicious attack" on his character.
