January 16, 2025 Court Grants Speed Darlington ₦20m Bail Over Alleged Cybercrime

Justice Ekerete Alan of the Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to singer Darlington Achakpo, popularly known as Speed Darlington, in the sum of ₦20 million with one surety in the same amount.

The ruling followed the singer’s not-guilty plea to a two-count charge of alleged cybercrime, with his lawyer, Marshall Abubakar, moving the bail application.

Justice Alan specified that the surety must be a Level 10 civil servant residing in Abuja. The surety is required to depose to an affidavit of means, with their address verified by the court registrar. Additionally, the surety must be either a staff member of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) or a federal worker, providing both their letters of appointment and latest promotion for verification by the deputy chief registrar.

The court also ordered Speed Darlington to surrender his international passport and submit two recent passport photographs along with those of the surety to the court registrar.

Pending the fulfillment of these bail conditions, Justice Alan directed that the singer remain in custody at Kuje Correctional Centre.

The case, filed by the Inspector-General of Police for alleged cybercrime offenses, is set to continue on March 18.
