The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has confirmed that a fire outbreak destroyed several shanties in the Surulere area of Lagos State.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of LASEMA, shared the details in a statement released on Saturday.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the agency received distress calls through the 767 and 112 emergency toll-free lines at 1:18 a.m., prompting the activation of a response team from Onipanu.

“Upon arrival at 1:31 a.m., the team discovered a row of makeshift shanty structures beside the canal had been engulfed by fire,” he said.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire originated in one of the rooms and quickly spread to the adjacent rooms in the row.

Thanks to the swift response of emergency teams, the fire was brought under control. “No casualties or injuries were recorded at the incident scene,” Oke-Osanyintolu added.

He further confirmed that the fire had been completely extinguished and that all dampening, search, and rescue operations had been successfully concluded.
