Two police officers were killed during a Boko Haram attack on a police station in Gajiram, Nganzai Local Government Area of Borno State.

The assault occurred late on Wednesday night, with one officer critically injured in the exchange of gunfire between the attackers and police personnel stationed at the facility. The officers, aided by members of the Civilian Joint Task Force, successfully repelled the terrorists.

A security source reported that the attack began around 11 p.m. and confirmed that no police infrastructure or equipment was damaged. However, an official police statement indicated the incident happened around 12:10 a.m. on Thursday.

The statement from the Borno State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASP Kenneth Daso, revealed that grenades were recovered during an assessment led by the state’s Commissioner of Police, Yusufu Lawal.

“On 9th January 2025 at about 12:10 a.m., unknown gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram terrorists attempted to invade Nganzai Police Division. Gallant officers on duty repelled the attack after an intense gun battle. The terrorists threw grenades, one of which landed on a shelter tent behind the station, fatally wounding two officers,” the statement read.

The police added that the bodies of the deceased officers were transferred to the State General Hospital in Maiduguri. Two grenades were recovered by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit during the site inspection.

Commissioner Lawal commended the bravery of the officers who thwarted the attack and extended his condolences to the families of the fallen personnel. The command reassured the public of its commitment to safety and security, stating that normalcy has been restored in the area.
