December 12, 2024 Senate Launches Probe Into FCT Demolitions, Summons Wike

The Senate has launched an investigation into recent demolitions in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), forming an investigative committee to address the issue.

The committee will summon FCT Minister Nyesom Wike to provide explanations for the demolitions, which have left many residents displaced. The motion, introduced by Senator Ireti Kingibe of the FCT Senatorial District, raised concerns over the alleged illegal demolition of structures in the nation’s capital and called for an immediate halt to further actions.

The Senate tasked the committee to examine the demolitions and submit a detailed report within a specified timeframe.

Additionally, the Senate summoned the Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria PLC for failing to respond to invitations to clarify the company’s involvement in the Odukpani-Itu Highway project. The highway, which spans Cross River and Akwa Ibom states, is a vital transportation and economic link for the south-south region.

Senator Osita Ngwu, who sponsored the motion, alleged that Julius Berger has repeatedly ignored invitations despite receiving over N18 billion in public funds for the project.

The Senate condemned the company’s actions, emphasizing that disregarding lawful invitations undermines the constitutional authority of the National Assembly and constitutes contempt.
