A driver narrowly escaped death on Monday morning when a 40-foot container fell onto a Toyota Camry with registration number LSR 293 HJ at Mile 2, en route to Apapa Ports in Lagos.
The incident occurred around 8 a.m., according to eyewitness reports. Fortunately, the driver's life was saved thanks to the swift intervention of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) and other emergency services, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA).
The driver was promptly rescued and rushed to the hospital by the joint rescue team, where he received immediate medical attention.
Officers from the Kirikiri Police Division ensured security during the operation, allowing emergency responders to work without interference. The Toyota Camry was successfully removed from beneath the container, and efforts to clear the fallen container were underway as of 9:30 a.m. Meanwhile, LASTMA officers managed traffic to reduce congestion and restore normal flow.
The General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, emphasized the need for truck drivers and owners to properly secure containers to prevent such life-threatening incidents. He reiterated that negligence in this regard poses a serious danger to lives and property.
“LASTMA remains committed to ensuring the safety and efficiency of Lagos roadways. We will continue to collaborate with relevant stakeholders to enforce traffic laws and enhance public safety,” Bakare-Oki said.
