The 10th Senate President’s U-18 Unity Cup is set to kick off on November 10, running through November 17 in Abuja. Dubbed the “Renewed Hope Edition,” this landmark tournament, organized by the Grassroot Sports Federation, South-South, aims to promote unity in diversity while nurturing young football talents.

With 13 teams competing for the top prize, the event promises a showcase of skill, sportsmanship, and camaraderie. Tournament coordinator Hon. John Bassey Ekpenyong outlined the goals of the event: fostering unity, discovering emerging talents, creating employment opportunities through football, and addressing youth restiveness.

Ekpenyong also thanked the National Assembly leadership, particularly Senate President Senator Godswill Akpabio GCON, along with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR, for their dedication to sports development. Their support, as evidenced by the re-establishment of the National Sports Commission, highlights a commitment to advancing sports across Nigeria.

“The participating teams, selected from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones with two teams per zone and a special team from the host city, Abuja, reflect the rich diversity and talent across the country. This tournament offers young athletes a platform to showcase their abilities, opening doors to a promising future in football,” Ekpenyong said.

Honoring Senator Akpabio, who serves as life patron of the Grassroots Sports Federation, South-South, Ekpenyong recalled Akpabio’s unwavering support for grassroots sports, a legacy dating back to his tenure as Akwa Ibom State Governor, during which over 200 players benefited.
