October 11, 2024 Cuban Musician El Taiger Passes Away At 37

Cuban musician Jose Manuel Carbajal Zaldivar, popularly known as "El Taiger," passed away on Thursday in Miami at the age of 37, a week after being hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the head. El Taiger, a renowned "urbano" artist who blended reggaeton with traditional Cuban music, was famous for hits like "La Historia," "Papelito," and "Habla Matador."

The Cuban Institute of Music paid tribute to the artist on Facebook, acknowledging his unwavering Cuban identity and love for his homeland. "We bid farewell to one of the most recognized figures of the urban genre," the institute said.

Based in the United States for several years, El Taiger had been in the hospital since October 3 after Miami authorities found him unconscious in a car. The Miami police are investigating the shooting. His family expressed gratitude to the medical team and those who offered prayers and tributes during his hospitalization. In a statement on social media, they encouraged fans to "turn up the volume of your music, dance, and celebrate his life."

Legendary Cuban band Los Van Van also mourned his death, posting on Instagram, "We are deeply saddened by your death, but we are proud to have known you and shared the stage with you. Rest in peace, tireless warrior."

On Thursday night, in the Guanabacoa neighborhood of eastern Havana, scores of people gathered in a park to honor El Taiger. In front of an old church, they lit candles, placed photos of the musician, and sang his songs, turning on their phone lights as a tribute. "We are sad, very sad, but we are celebrating as he wanted," said Yuli Mauro, 30, dancing with her son. "He said he wanted parties and joy. We've already lit his candle so that he can reach heaven with light."
