President Joe Biden has announced that he will not seek re-election. Facing criticism from members of his party who believe his cognitive abilities are declining due to his age, 81, Biden made his decision known in a post on X.
“I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term,” he wrote in a statement on X.
Biden also endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic Party’s presidential candidate for the upcoming November election.
“Today I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee of our party this year,” he posted on X on Sunday.
“Democrats — it’s time to come together and beat Trump. Let’s do this.”
Biden’s endorsement significantly boosts Harris's chances of becoming the Democratic Party’s candidate to challenge former President Donald Trump, who has been formally declared the Republican Party's candidate, in the November election.
