July 5, 2024 Lagos Police Save Pregnant Teenager from Suicide Attempt

A 19-year-old pregnant girl, on the brink of suicide, was rescued by police officers from the Ikorodu Area Command in Lagos. The girl, who worked as a Point of Sale (POS) operator, was reportedly distressed because her employer threatened to arrest her after she was scammed out of N100,000 by a customer.

When the Ikorodu Area Commander, Mr. Musendique Orobiyi, learned about the girl's suicidal intentions, he immediately dispatched a team of female detectives to find and save her. The detectives located her in Iyana-Iyesi, Ogun State, just as she was about to consume a bottle of sniper pesticide. They rescued her and brought her back to the Ikorodu Area Command, where they provided her with food, clothing, and support before transferring her to the gender unit at the Lagos State Police Command headquarters in Ikeja.

Speaking with Vanguard, the girl (whose name has been withheld) shared her struggles, explaining that her problems began after her boyfriend denied responsibility for her pregnancy and disappeared. Compounding her difficulties, she was defrauded of N100,000 at her POS job through a fake bank alert.

She lamented that she had no support system, had never attended antenatal care, and was unaware of her baby’s gender due to a lack of funds. Her parents are divorced, and she has no contact with them.

Expressing gratitude, she said, "I didn’t know the police could help like this. They took me to Ikorodu, fed me, and provided clothes. The Area Commander was amazing, ensuring I was well cared for. Initially, I thought my employer wanted to arrest me, but I found sympathy and help from the police, which changed my mind about ending my life."

Benjamin Hundey, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Police Command, confirmed the incident.
