Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has directed the state auditor general to audit the accounts of all 23 local government areas for the past three years. This decision is part of the state's response to the ongoing political crisis.
During the swearing-in of the new Caretaker Committee Chairmen for the Local Government Areas, Governor Fubara explained that the audit aims to provide a financial check for the incoming officials. He advised the caretaker chairmen to prioritize the interests of their communities and validate the government's decision to appoint them.
Fubara highlighted that the current situation reflects the democratic process. He stressed that the opposition to tenure extension is crucial not only for Rivers State but for the entire country, as it could set a precedent nationwide. He also noted that it is common for many states to be managed by caretaker committees.
