June 4, 2024 Operations Resume At MMIA

Aviation Unions have unblocked airport terminals that were previously barricaded, following the suspension of an indefinite strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). Mr. Francis Akinjole, the General Secretary of the Air Traffic Services Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (ATSSSAN), stated that the strike was "relaxed" for a week to allow for further discussions with the Federal Government regarding a new minimum wage.

Akinjole confirmed that all access points previously blocked at domestic airport terminals I (General Aviation Terminal) and II (Murtala Muhammed Airport II) and others had been reopened. Mr. Alale Adedayo, President General of the Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAP), mentioned that organized labor had agreed to continue negotiations with the Federal Government.

Adedayo noted that flight operations had resumed at the domestic wing of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport in Ikeja. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that activities at the domestic wing were back to normal, with passengers seen boarding Value Jet, Ibom Air, Arik Air, and United Nigeria Airline flights at Murtala Mohammed Airport II managed by Bi-Courtney Aviation Services Ltd.

One passenger, Mr. Muyioluwa Maraiyese, expressed surprise that the labor unions did not barricade roads during the strike to prevent road transport, as they had disrupted flight operations. However, at the check-in stand for Air Peace flights from Lagos to Abuja, it was announced that flights had been rescheduled.

An unhappy passenger of the airline, Monalisa Phillip, stated that the airline did not provide any explanation for the rescheduling of the flights. NAN reported that the NLC and TUC had suspended the indefinite strike for a week to continue negotiations with the Federal Government regarding a new minimum wage. The strike began on Monday due to the lack of progress in negotiations on a new minimum wage.
