March 7, 2024 FG Threatens To Revoke Licenses Of Discos Over Power Supply

The Minister of Power, Bayo Adelabu has threatened tough sanctions, including license revocation on electricity distribution companies over the poor electricity supply in the country.

The minister who made this known in a statement, stated that non-performance will not be tolerated in the power sector.

Expressing concern over erratic electricity supply, Adelabu summoned the Chief Executives of Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC), and the Managing Director of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), to a ‘crucial meeting’.

He noted that his Ministry has been exerting pressure on the GenCos to enhance their performance, resulting in a recent increase in generation to over 4000MW.

He said despite the progress some distribution companies are failing to adequately distribute the power supplied by Transmission Company of Nigeria, while vandalism of power infrastructure compounds the problem in regions such as Abuja, Benin, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan.
