There are mounting concerns regarding the participation of striker Victor Osimhen in the Super Eagles' upcoming Africa Cup of Nations semi-final clash against South Africa.
The Napoli striker is reportedly experiencing abdominal discomfort and has not accompanied the team to Bouaké, the venue for Wednesday's crucial match.
A statement released by the team on Monday revealed that Osimhen could join the squad on Tuesday, pending clearance from the team's medical staff. The 25-year-old forward has been placed under close observation by the medical team, with one member remaining in Abidjan to monitor his condition.
The statement further explained, "Team members travelled from Abidjan to Bouaké today via a 10 pm Air Cote D’Ivoire flight. Osimhen did not, however, make the trip due to abdominal discomfort. Team medics confirmed he was under close watch with a medical team member staying behind in Abidjan. If cleared by tomorrow morning, he will join the rest of the squad before 5 pm."
Despite scoring just one goal in the tournament thus far, Osimhen has been a standout performer for the Eagles. His partnership upfront with Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon has been instrumental in the team's journey to their 16th AFCON semi-final.
Nigeria is scheduled to face South Africa at the Stade De La Paix in Bouake at 6 pm, and the potential absence of Osimhen could be a significant blow to their aspirations in the competition.
