Abel Olumuyiwa Enitan, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, has assumed control of the ministry in the wake of the suspension of Minister Betta Edu.
This action aligns with President Bola Tinubu's directive, which suspended Edu on Monday due to allegations of her involvement in an N585 million fraud.
The accusations against the minister involve the alleged transfer of public funds into private accounts. Enitan officially took on the responsibilities of the ministry after receiving a letter from the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday night.
Tinubu, through his Special Adviser, Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, had instructed the suspended minister to "hand over to the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation." Furthermore, President Tinubu directed Edu to fully cooperate with investigating authorities during their inquiry.
In addition, a panel headed by the Coordinating Minister of the Economy and Minister of Finance has been tasked by the President to conduct a thorough examination of the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programmes. The goal is to reform relevant institutions and programs comprehensively, addressing any institutional weaknesses for the exclusive benefit of disadvantaged households and restoring lost public confidence in the initiative.
