January 8, 2024 Driver Dies As Trucks Collide On Lagos Bridge

A tragic incident occurred on Monday on Ojuelegba Bridge in Lagos, resulting in the death of a truck driver who became trapped in a multiple collision involving two other trucks. Fortunately, his assistant escaped unharmed.

Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary at the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, disclosed the unfortunate event.

The incident unfolded at 1.37 a.m. when a LASEMA Response Team, returning from a recovery operation in the Ijora axis of Lagos, encountered a series of accidents involving three articulated trucks on Ojuelegba Bridge. The collision included two trucks carrying sand and a third loaded with chicken feed.

According to Oke-Osanyintolu, the lead truck, laden with sand, experienced a mechanical failure in motion, abruptly coming to a halt. The two other trucks, travelling at high speeds from behind, collided with the first truck, leading to the entrapment and subsequent death of the driver.

Following the tragic event, the LASEMA team promptly extricated the deceased's body and transported it to a morgue. All vehicles involved in the accident were successfully removed from the bridge and taken to the LASTMA office at Iponri, Surulere.

Oke-Osanyintolu assured the public that Ojuelegba Bridge has been reopened for safe and unimpeded vehicular movement. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for vigilance to prevent such unfortunate accidents.
