On Tuesday, Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu took decisive action by ordering the arrest of several motorcyclists, including a lance corporal, for violating traffic regulations along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway. Wale Ajetunmobi, the Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, shared videos of the incident on his X handle.
Lawless okada riders were caught riding in the wrong direction along the expressway and, upon spotting Governor Sanwo-Olu's convoy, attempted to evade arrest by fleeing on foot, leaving their motorcycles and passengers behind. In one of the videos, the governor can be seen instructing security officers to apprehend one of the offenders, who identified himself as a lance corporal in the Army.
Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed his displeasure, saying, "Put him there; let your father come and rescue you. You're telling me you are a soldier; that is the reason I'm going to lock you up." He also addressed passengers patronising the erring motorcyclists, emphasizing their role in perpetuating lawlessness and endangering lives.
"You people are the ones causing this. Maybe I should arrest two of you and put you in the guardroom. You're entering Okada, and they are taking one way. Is it good? And they'll now hit you; you'll go and fall, and you die; they'll say the government killed you. What a shame!" the governor remarked.
Earlier in the day, Jubril Gawat, the Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, had disclosed that Governor Sanwo-Olu was at the Lagos State University, Ojo Campus, for the official unveiling of the Femi Gbajabiamila Conference Centre located inside the campus. The governor's commitment to enforcing traffic regulations underscores his dedication to maintaining law and order on Lagos roads.
