December 22, 2023 Port Harcourt Refinery Begins Operations

The Federal government has confirmed the commencement of operations at the Port Harcourt Refining Company, PHRC, Limited,

It announced that the facility commenced operations on December 20, 2023, as the first phase of work at the plant had been completed, adding that refined petroleum products would start flowing from the refinery after the Christmas break.

The development came months after the Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil) Heineken Lokpobiri said in August that the refinery, with a combined capacity of 210,000 barrels per day, will commence operation this month.

Minister Heineken Lokpobiri, who led the Refinery Steering Committee members to inspect the facility, congratulated the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and Nigerians for the feat.

On his part, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Limited, Mele Kyari, said the company employees worked day and night for over 9.6 million person-hours to get the refinery back on stream.

Nigeria’s refineries in Port Harcourt, Kaduna, and Warri have been dormant for decades, as the Federal Government has spent several billions of naira to revamp them.
