Gunfire and tear gas erupt at the Rivers State House of Assembly as impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara commence.
As some lawmakers gathered on Monday to initiate the impeachment process against Governor Siminalayi Fubara, the Rivers State House of Assembly Complex bore witness to the alarming sounds of gunshots and tear gas. A total of 23 lawmakers, under the leadership of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, presided over the session, making the decisive choice to set the impeachment process in motion.
In a bold move, the legislators also took the step of suspending Edison Ehie, the House's leader, and several of their fellow members believed to be aligned with the governor.
The events that unfolded came on the heels of a tragic incident the previous night, where an explosion ravaged the assembly complex, leading to the destruction of the chamber.
