The Labour Party has pledged its full support for the upcoming indefinite strike action declared by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
Demonstrating unwavering solidarity, the party is championing the cause of Nigerian workers in their pursuit of improved working conditions through legitimate channels.
Scheduled to kick off on Tuesday, October 3, 2023, the strike action is a direct response to a range of demands from workers nationwide. These demands encompass an elevation of the minimum wage, lowered prices of goods and services, and enhanced working environments.
The Labour Party has not held back in its criticism of the government's perceived lack of responsiveness and empathy towards the genuine grievances of the labour force.
Furthermore, the party has accused the government of adopting a punitive stance against Nigerian workers who raised their voices during the February 25 Presidential Election.
In a statement released by the National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party, Obiora Ifoh, the party left no room for ambiguity: "Labour Party fully supports the resolution of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) to embark on an industrial action slated to commence as of Tuesday, October 3rd."
Continuing the statement, it was emphasized, "We have closely observed, over the last four months, various meetings between Organised Labour and various government bodies, including the President of the Senate, the presidency, and the ministers of Labour, as well as all the efforts made by the Labour leadership to convey the magnitude of suffering government policies have imposed on Nigerian Workers and the entire populace since the inception of this administration."
With the strike looming, the Labour Party rallied its members and supporters to gear up for a potentially protracted mass action. The resounding message from the party is crystal clear: "No retreat, no surrender."
