September 5, 2023 Sylvester Inquest Resumes With Compelling Testimonies From Minors

After a prolonged hiatus, the wheels of justice have again begun to turn in the coroner's inquest surrounding the tragic passing of 12-year-old Dowen College student Sylvester Oromoni in Lekki, Lagos. The proceedings presided over by Magistrate Mikail Kadiri at the Magistrates’ Court in Ogba, Lagos, have recently taken significant steps forward.

The latest development in this emotionally charged case saw the coroner extend an invitation to Mrs Oromoni, the grieving mother of the deceased. She has been summoned to appear in court on the upcoming Monday, September 11, to provide her testimony.

During these proceedings, particular attention was paid to the testimonies of two college students who had previously offered their accounts. Regrettably, the initial testimonies were marred by inaudibility and a lack of clarity, rendering them insufficient for proper documentation.

The coroner ordered these students to retell their stories to rectify this, ensuring that all details were accurately captured. Due to the sensitive nature of the case and to safeguard the minors' identities, these testimonies were conducted in a closed-door session. Following their revised testimonies, they were subjected to cross-examination by legal representatives representing various parties with interests in the case.

Subsequently, Barrister Andrew Efole, counsel to the Oromoni family, addressed the delays that have plagued the proceedings. While interruptions and adjournments have marked the case, all involved parties hope that justice will ultimately prevail, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding Sylvester Oromoni's untimely demise.
