Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr. has been bestowed a great honor by the Rio de Janeiro government, as they have named an anti-racism law after him.
The 'Vini Jr law,' which received unanimous approval from the Rio government in June, will entail the suspension or termination of sporting events in response to any racist incidents.
Throughout the previous season, the 22-year-old footballer was subjected to racial abuse on multiple occasions. In a ceremony held at the Maracana Stadium, where he made his senior debut for Flamengo, Vinicius expressed his gratitude, stating,
"Today is a very special day, and I hope my family is very proud. I am very young, and I didn't expect to receive this tribute."
Reports from local media indicate that the law was inspired by Vinicius' courageous response to racial abuse during a match in Valencia in May. As the player pointed out those responsible, the game was halted. The newly established law includes guidelines for handling racism complaints and mandates educational campaigns.
Furthermore, Vinicius was presented with accolades from Rio's legislative assembly and city council. His footprints were also added to the stadium's walk of fame, joining those of Brazilian football legends such as Pele, Garrincha, and Ronaldo.
Rafael Picciani, Rio's secretary for sports, expressed his pride in paying tribute to "an idol of Brazilian football, born and raised in Rio de Janeiro."
Additionally, Vinicius has been appointed to lead a special anti-racism committee comprising players, established by FIFA.
In recent matches, Vinicius participated in post-season friendlies for Brazil against Guinea and Senegal, organized as part of an ongoing anti-racism campaign. This initiative will continue with a friendly match against Spain at Real Madrid's Bernabeu stadium in March next year.
Reflecting on the recognition he has received, Vinicius humbly shared, "Sometimes I wonder if I deserve so much. I didn't expect to receive so many awards and such affection at the Maracana, where I watched and played so many Flamengo matches."
Vinicius made the transition from Flamengo to Real Madrid in 2018, and his talent and resilience continue to inspire both on and off the field.
