Covenant University, a prestigious private institution situated in Ota, Nigeria, has achieved a remarkable milestone by securing a position in the top 10 universities in Africa.

The highly regarded Times Higher Education (THE) recently released its inaugural Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings for 2023, placing Covenant University at an impressive seventh position.

While the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, claimed the coveted title of the continent's best university, Covenant University stands out as the sole Nigerian representative in the top 10.

The second spot on the list was secured by the University of Johannesburg, also based in South Africa. Additionally, the third position went to the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences in Tanzania, showcasing the diverse range of institutions recognized in the rankings.

The THE Sub-Saharan Africa University Rankings for 2023 assess universities across the region based on a comprehensive set of indicators that evaluate their strength and performance. These indicators encompass five essential pillars: "access and fairness," "Africa impact," "teaching skills," "student engagement," and "resources and finance."

On a national scale, Nigeria takes pride in having the highest number of ranked universities, with 37 institutions making the list. Following closely behind is South Africa with nine universities, while Ghana and Kenya each have seven represented institutions. Furthermore, Somalia and Uganda are featured with five universities each.

The ranking data also sheds light on the distinctions between public and private universities. Among the 88 ranked institutions, a significant majority of 59 (67%) receive public funding, while 21 (24%) operate as private, not-for-profit establishments. Additionally, eight institutions (9%) fall under the category of private for-profit universities. Notably, seven out of the top 10 universities are publicly funded.

Covenant University's inclusion in the top 10 universities in Africa is a testament to its commitment to academic excellence and its reputation as a leading educational institution within the continent.

This achievement reflects the university's dedication to providing high-quality education and fostering an environment conducive to learning and research.
