March 7, 2022 Netflix Suspends Service In Russia Amid Ukraine Invasion

Netflix has moved to bar its streaming service in Russia following President Putin’s invasion of Ukraine.

Before the ban, the streamer was said to be working on four originals in Russia.

According to various sources, the streaming service said that it would halt all future initiatives, acquisitions, and services in Russia in an effort to oppose the country’s conflict.

“We have decided to discontinue our service in Russia due to the situation on the ground,” a Netflix spokeswoman said in a recent interview.

Netflix had already announced four new Russian originals, including a murder thriller series created by Russian filmmaker Dasha Zhuk, prior to the recent move. The series was placed on hold once primary photography began.

Despite the fact that the streaming platform is relatively young in Russia (it began in 2016 with an estimated million members), the newest action follows other worldwide corporate entities and film studios who have decided to boycott the country in recent weeks due to the ongoing war.
Even while sanctions remain in place, companies such as Microsoft and Apple have indicated that they are
suspending operations in the country.
