November 25, 2021 Sporting Lisbon Beat 10-Man Dortmund To Earn A Last-16 Ticket In UCL

Sporting Lisbon defeated 10-man Borussia Dortmund to advance to the Champions League knockout stage at the expense of the German team.

Sporting wanted to improve on their 1-0 loss in the opposite fixture, and they did so in the first half, thanks to two Pedro Goncalves goals, with the first goal coming from a defensive error from Dortmund.

Emre Can was then dismissed following a scuffle with Pedro Porro which occured off the ball.

Pedro Goncalves missed out on a hat-trick chance when his penalty was saved by Gregor Kobel late in the game, but Porro pounced and scored on the rebound.

Dortmund goalkeeper Kobel saved Goncalves' shot, only for Porro, on loan from Manchester City, to head in and seal the victory nine minutes later.

Donyell Malen scored for the visitors in extra time, but it was all but a consolatory goal for a side who lacked adequate firepower in the final third as their star forward Erling Haaland was still sidelined due to injury.

The goal, however was not enough to prevent the side from crashing out of the Champions League but have earned a place at the Europa League.
