Aging is an important part of life. Most people feel that they don’t grow stronger, or better with themselves as they age, but aging can actually bring out some of the best parts of us.
Some few tips here on how to get better with your age:
BE KIND TO YOUR SKIN
The skin is the biggest and most attractive organ in the body. When treated with care, it can serve as a protection from the elements, regulate the body temperature, and provide sensation.
To keep the skin functioning fresh, even at an old age:
- Wear sunscreen and protective clothing.
- Get yearly skin cancer screenings.
- Stick to gentle products in your anti-aging care routine.
- Stay hydrated.
EXERCISE
Regular exercise has proven to significantly lower the risk of diseases, such as disease and cancer, and helps to retain mobility longer. Exercise also lowers stress, helps in sleep, skin and bone health, and mood.
It is recommended that adults get at least 2.5-5 hours of moderate exercise, and 1.25-2.5 hours of vigorous intensity aerobic exercise.
WATCH YOUR DIET
Healthy foods are very important when aging. It is recommended that you eat:
- Fruits and Vegetables, fresh, frozen or canned.
- Lean protein like fish and beans.
- Cereals, bread, rice and pasta.
- Healthy fats.
- It is advisable to stay away from processed foods, refined sugar, unhealthy fats.
LOOK AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH
Being happy and keeping stress down goes a long way in helping one live well and age well.
Here are a few tips for mental health:
Spend time with friends and loved ones – Meaningful relationships and strong social network improve mental health and physical well-being. Having a pet can also lower stress and blood pressure, reduce case of loneliness, and better your mood.
Accept yourself and your Age – People who maintain a positive attitude about aging live longer and recover better. Aging cannot be avoided, and learning to embrace it can make all the difference.
Do Things You Enjoy – Engage in enjoyable activities to fuel your happiness. Spend time with nature, learn a new hobby, volunteer, and do whatever brings you joy.
QUIT SMOKING AND DECREASE ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION
Smoking and alcohol have been shown to cause premature aging and increase risk of heart disease.
Quitting smoking, especially if it’s a habit, is not easy, but there are many resources to help you quit.
Limit the amount of alcohol you take to 1-2 drinks a day.
