April 14, 2021 100-Day Countdown To The Olympics Begins

The countdown to the delayed Tokyo Olympics is has commenced, with 100 days to go to the opening ceremony slated to hold on 23 July.

The quadrennial competition originally due to take place from 24 July to 9 August 2020, was postponed in March 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, making this is the first time that the Olympic Games have been postponed and rescheduled, rather than cancelled and will not allow spectators from overseas.

Amidst the pandemic, the organizing committee replaced its president, after he resigned citing public outrage over sexist remarks, a female president in Seiko Hashimoto was appointed and added 12 new women directors to the board, meaning women now make up 42% of a committee previously dominated by men.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has released a first draft of its 'playbook' explaining the many rules that must be followed in order to ensure a "safe and successful" event, as well as other safety measures put in place, all in a bid to ensure the 23 July date is realized.
