279 girls abducted when gunmen stormed the Government Girls Secondary School Jangebe last Friday have been released from captivity.

The number of those kidnapped was put at 317 by the police but the government says it is inaccurate.

Governor BELLO MATAWALLE confirmed that the girls were released after negotiations with the bandits and no ransom was paid.

The 279 girls were taken to the governor’s office in Gusau, the state capital for debriefing.

Addressing journalists, Governor MATAWALLE said the state is working with security agencies so as to avoid a recurrence

The girls were abducted two weeks after bandits abducted dozens of students and staff from a boys school in Kagara, Niger. They have all been released as well.
