South African sensation Tyla stole the spotlight at the 30th MTV Europe Music Awards in Manchester, United Kingdom, on Sunday, taking home three major awards. She claimed the Best Afrobeats Artist title, triumphing over Nigerian stars Asake, Tems, Rema, Burna Boy, and Ayra Starr.
Tyla also took home the Best African Act award, beating nominees Ayra Starr, Asake, DBN Gogo, TitoM & Yuppe, and Diamond Platnumz. For her third win of the night, she secured the Best R&B Artist award, standing out among global stars like Kehlani, SZA, Tinashe, Usher, and Victoria Monét. Tyla capped her triumphant night with an acoustic performance of her hit song "Water."
Meanwhile, Nigerian artist Ayra Starr, nominated in four categories—Best African Act, Best New Artist, Best Afrobeats Artist, and Best Push—did not take home any awards.
This victory adds to Tyla's impressive year, following her win at the Grammys for Best African Music Performance and her Best Afrobeats Artist win at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards, where she also surpassed several Nigerian artists.
