Barcelona Unveil New Signing Ferran Torres

Ferran Torres has joined Barcelona from Manchester City on a contract that runs until June 2027 and has a 1 billion euro (£842 million) buyout clause.

Only 18 months after joining City from Valencia, the 21-year-old attacker returns to Spain in a £46.3 million transfer.

Ansu Fati and Pedri signed contract extensions with Barca in October that included 1 billion euro release clauses.

Barcelona will pay £8.4 million in add-ons and will have to sell some players to meet La Liga’s financial requirements.

Despite its current financial difficulties, the club is able to fund the acquisition thanks to a recent bank loan.

On Thursday, City manager Pep Guardiola confirmed the transfer and expressed his delight for Torres.

Torres, a Spain international, has made 43 appearances for City since signing from Valencia in August 2020, scoring 16 goals.

Torres is “recovering nicely after a fracture in his right foot,” according to Barcelona’s medical report, although there is no timetable for his return.

Torres informed Guardiola that he wanted to go in order to play more regular first-team football, and City believe they have strong forward depth, with Bernardo Silva, Jack Grealish, Riyad Mahrez, Raheem Sterling, Gabriel Jesus, and Phil Foden all vying for a starting slot at Etihad Stadium.

Barcelona are short on forward players after failing to maintain Argentine superstar Lionel Messi due to financial difficulties, allowing Antoine Griezmann to return to Atletico Madrid over the summer.

Sergio Aguero, a former City striker, joined Barca but was forced to retire from the sport earlier this month at the age of 33 due to a heart problem.

West Ham Claim Comfortable Win Over Struggling Watford To Move To Fifth On Table

West Ham manager David Moyes says he isn't thinking about finishing in the top four after his team came back from behind to clinch a victory over Watford.

The Hammers came into the game with only one win in their previous seven games, a run that had seen them fall out of contention for a place in the Champions League.

When Emmanuel Dennis pushed the ball past Craig Dawson in the fourth minute before sending a stunning goal into the top corner, it looked like the slump would continue.

West Ham, on the other hand, came back with two goals in two first-half minutes and doubled that in the second half to move into fifth position, four points behind Arsenal.

When asked how vital the win was in keeping his team in contention for the Champions League, Moyes replied, "We are not talking about the top four, you are."

"We are only talking about doing the best we can, challenging the top, trying to be in and around the top teams if we can.

"We enjoyed it when we were in the top four and now looking forward, wanting to get back in again."

While the Hammers are back on the rise, Watford, who were booed off at full-time, sit in 17th place and two points above the relegation zone after their third consecutive home defeat.

10-Man Southampton Hold Tottenham To A 1-1 Draw

After being held by a Southampton team that played for more than 50 minutes with 10 men, Antonio Conte says Tottenham must “improve a lot” and it “won’t be simple to fight for something this season.”

Spurs were 1-0 down at St Mary’s as James Ward-Prowse darted over a bouncing ball and volleyed a twisting goal past Frenchman, Hugo Lloris.

However, the game was thrown into disarray for the Saints when Mohammed Salisu fouled Son Heung-min in the box, earning him a second booking in 12 minutes and allowing Harry Kane to equalize from the penalty spot.

Conte said after becoming the first manager in Tottenham’s history to go undefeated in his first seven league games, “My demands are extremely high because I am used to being competitive and to win – and, for sure, there is a tremendous disappointment for me when we don’t win.”

“We need to improve a lot. For sure it was an opportunity that we missed. When you have this type of situation you have to try to exploit, to try to get three points.”

Southampton boss, Ralph Hasenhuttl made six changes from his side’s Boxing Day win at West Ham, and Kyle Walker-Peters represented his side’s grit and resilience in the second half, leaping to deflect a header away from Kane before taking a Ben Davies shot straight in the face.

Armando Broja robbed Tottenham defender Eric Dier before firing over in injury time, sparing Spurs more misery on a day when they could have taken more.

Southampton, who have only been beaten at home by Wolves all season, earned a point to move up to 13th in the rankings.
