ATP Criticized Over Approach To Peng Shuai Case

The ATP has been heavily criticised for their approach after not joining the WTA in suspending tournaments in China amid continued concern for Peng Shuai.

The WTA said it was particularly concerned about risks players and staff could face if it went ahead with events in China.

An ATP statement said the body believes “having a global presence gives us the best chance of creating opportunity and making an impact”.

35-year-old Peng vanished from public view for three weeks after accusing a top Chinese official of sexual assault.

On Wednesday, the WTA halted tournaments in China, one of its most valuable markets, citing concerns over Peng’s safety.

The International Olympic Committee later said it held a second video call with Peng but also shared concerns for her safety.

There had been calls for the men’s ATP Tour to adopt a similar approach to the WTA, but after a statement released on Thursday, it stopped short of postponing tournaments.

The International Tennis Federation, the sport’s governing body, also stated that it would “continue to support all efforts” to address Peng’s allegations.

Conte’s Unbeaten League Run Continues As Spurs Defeat Brentford

Antonio Conte's unbeaten league start as Tottenham head coach continued as the London side kept pace with the top four with a comfortable win over a profligate Brentford.

A 12th-minute own goal from right wing-back Sergi Canos handed the home side the lead, before Son Heung-min finished off a scintillating counter-attack by slotting home in the second half.

The opener came from a Son dinked cross after a short corner early on in the game, with Pontus Jansson's clearing header ricocheting off Ben Davies and onto Canos' path before flying into the roof of the net.

Spurs, taking the initiative, pressed on to increase their lead, with Son denied from range in the first half, while Harry Kane saw a one-on-one effort well saved by Alvaro Fernandez after the break.

Son got the goal that his performance, and Spurs' display, deserved when he latched onto Sergio Reguilon's cross to tap home from six yards.

It was a poor outing from Thomas Frank's side who have now recorded a third loss in their last three games, with their only shot on target in the whole game a tame left-footed effort from Ivan Toney.

The win ensured Tottenham's climb to sixth - two points behind West Ham in fourth - while Brentford slipped to 12th.
