Robert Lewandowski Equals Goals Record In Bayern Munich Win

Robert Lewandowski equalled Gerd Muller's Bundesliga record for goals scored in a single calendar year as Bayern Munich thrashed Stuttgart.

Lewandowski's second goal on Tuesday was his 42nd in 2021, matching Muller's haul from 1972.

Serge Gnabry scored either side of half-time to put the visitors 2-0 up, before Lewandowski struck twice in three minutes.

Germany international Gnabry completed his hat-trick two minutes later.

One more goal in Bayern's final game of the year - at home to Wolfsburg on Friday - will give Lewandowski the record outright.

In May, the Poland striker scored in the last minute of the 2020-21 season to break Muller's record for Bundesliga goals in a campaign.

Gnabry, who was involved in all five goals in Stuttgart, has found the net nine times in Germany's top flight this season - more than any other midfielder in the division.

The win moves Julian Nagelsmann's side nine points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund, who can cut the gap at the top of the table to six points with victory at home to bottom club Greuther Furth on Wednesday.

The University of Ibadan has emerged as the best university in the country, following the 2021 ranking released by the National Universities Commission on Monday December 13.

Prof. Peter Okebukola who was the lead presenter at a capacity building workshop on improving the ranking of public universities in Nigeria, organised by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, said the ranking involved 113 universities across the country and 12 indicators were used.

The institutions were ranked based on total number of full-time students, number of international students, students and staff ratio, efficiency, google scholar index and contribution to knowledge economy.

Others include percentage of international staff, programmes with full time accreditation, all citation per capital, among others.

Okebukola revealed that some universities did not show up for the ranking and also urged them to partake in the next one.

He said;

“You cannot get any form of ranking system in the whole wide world that does what Nigeria has done. For this 2021 edition, based on the 12 indicators that we have developed, the University of Ibadan is the first followed by Federal University of Technology Akure.”

UAE Backs Down, Concedes Seven Flight Slots To Air Peace

In what appears as a move to avert a diplomatic row, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) yesterday conceded seven slots to Air Peace.

It has also granted the Nigerian carrier  the permit to fly directly to Dubai instead of Sharjah Airport, a source said.

But, the government said it was unaware of alleged stoppage of Nigerians by the UAE from entering any part of  the Emirates through other carriers.

According to sources, the General Civil Aviation Authority sent a December 13t, 2021 letter to Air Peace.

Although the Federal  Ministry of Foreign Affairs was not copied in breach of protocol, the Federal Government was said to have received the letter.

“In the letter, the UAE said Air Peace can fly directly to Dubai and not Sharjah Airport. This is the latest on the development.

“Even though they did not follow the right diplomatic channel by writing the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs which will in turn inform the Aviation Minister,  this is still a positive development.”

Asked if the UAE has stopped other carriers from conveying Nigerians to Dubai, the source said: “This is in the realm of rumours. I don’t think it is true. No official communication banning Nigerians from entering Dubai through other carriers. If anybody has such a directive, let him or her produce it. It will be in gross violation of international civil aviation regulations.

“The Federal Government got no such information at the diplomatic or official level. I think with the latest concessions,  the UAE was trying to avoid a diplomatic row with Nigeria. We also do not want any row with the UAE.”
