FIFA’s Biennial World Cup Plans To Generate Extra £3.3bn

A biennial World Cup would generate in excess of £3.3bn in additional revenue over a four-year cycle, delegates at Fifa's global summit have been told.

Fifa has proposed the change as part of a revamped calendar.

All 211 member associations were invited to the summit as the debate over Arsene Wenger's plan to double the frequency of the World Cup intensifies.

UEFA, Europe's major leagues and South American football's governing body Conmebol have opposed the plans.

CAF, the African governing body, has given its backing.

Premier League To Fulfill Festive Fixtures Amid Rising Covid-19 Cases

Premier League and EFL clubs have chosen to fulfil festive fixtures despite ongoing Covid-19 disruption.

The decision comes despite Premier League players returning a record 90 positive tests last week.

The Premier League's 20 clubs met on Monday to discuss the fixture list after six weekend games were postponed.

No vote took place and so two rounds of fixtures are in place across five days from 26 December, while the EFL will play games "where it is safe to do so".

It had been expected that the Premier League's gameweek 20, starting on 28 December, would be postponed in order to ease the pressure on Premier League squads.

Instead, clubs have been advised if they have 13 fit players, plus a goalkeeper, they should fulfil their games.

FA Cup replays in rounds three and four have however been scrapped and talks are ongoing on whether to reduce EFL Cup semi-final ties to one-leg matches.

Rafael Nadal Tests Positive For Covid-19

Rafael Nadal has tested positive for Covid-19 after returning home from the Mubadala World Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion was beaten by Britain's Andy Murray in the semi-finals of the exhibition event on Friday.

Nadal said he had experienced some "unpleasant moments" but hopes to improve "little by little".

The 35-year-old has only just returned to action after a long injury lay-off.

Nadal wrote on Twitter: "On my return home after playing the Abu Dhabi tournament, I have tested positive for Covid in the PCR test that was performed on me when I arrived in Spain.

"I am having some unpleasant moments but I hope that I will improve little by little. I am now homebound and have reported the result to those who have been in contact with me.

"As a consequence of the situation, I have to have total flexibility with my calendar and I will analyse my options depending on my evolution.

"I will keep you informed of any decisions about my future tournaments! Thank you all in advance for your support and understanding."

Nadal made his comeback in Abu Dhabi after a foot injury had ruled him out of the final months of the 2021 season.

The Spaniard had planned to play in an ATP tournament in Melbourne before competing at the Australian Open, which starts on 17 January.
