Seyi Awogbemi Sodiq, an 18-year-old Nigerian professional basketball player, died of a heart attack.
Sodiq, a member of the Alba Fehérvár men's basketball team, died in Abuja on November 19, 2022, a week before his 19th birthday.
The basketball player came in Hungary at the age of 13 and stood out from the local field with his exceptional results in the junior championships, according to the tribute on the club's website. He made his debut for the senior squad of the Székesfehérvár-based club at the age of 16.
According to Hungary Today, Sodiq was diagnosed with a dangerous disease last fall, and after considerable thought and on the advice of his parents, he opted not to have surgery in Hungary, instead returning to Abuja in February.
He had conventional treatment at home before returning to basketball a few months ago, practising with his previous club in Abuja and working on his recovery. His intention was to return to Hungary and play for Alba once again.
However, on Saturday, November 19, his heart stopped and he died.
Before Saturday night's league game, the young basketball player was memorialized with a minute of silence.
