June 28, 2024 Tinubu Directs Disbursement of N155bn for Nationwide Food Purchase

President Bola Tinubu has authorized the purchase and distribution of foodstuffs worth ₦155 billion across the nation. This directive was issued during the National Economic Council (NEC) meeting on Thursday in Abuja, where Tinubu called on state governors to collaborate in addressing the needs of the citizens.

According to presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu expressed his commitment to providing necessary support to alleviate the hardship faced by Nigerians.

"President Bola Tinubu has approved the immediate rollout of the National Construction and Household Support Programme to cover all geo-political zones in the country," the statement read. "As part of this program, ₦155 billion will be allocated for the purchase and distribution of assorted foodstuffs nationwide."

Additionally, Tinubu approved a ₦50,000 uplift grant for 100,000 families per state for three months. He stressed the importance of enhancing food production, noting the critical role of the Sokoto-Badagry Highway, which connects key agricultural regions and facilitates food export.

"Our states must collaborate to implement the essential reforms needed to meet the needs of our people. Time is a precious asset, and we must act swiftly," Tinubu said. "We are ready to support agricultural mechanization, provide high-quality seedlings, and install solar-powered irrigation facilities for year-round farming. Our goal is to produce sufficient food for our people and create jobs in the process."

Tinubu emphasized the need for coordination among NEC members to achieve these objectives. He invited governors to specify the support they need and to report back within seven days. "We must deliver on our targets at all levels to ensure food security and economic growth for Nigerians," he concluded.
