Reactions Trail Death Of OAU Lecturer, Ayo Ojediran, Who Reportedly Slumped And Died In His Office

Reactions have continued to trail the sudden death of a lecturer in the Faculty of Education, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Dr. Ayo Ojediran, who reportedly slumped and died in his office on Tuesday.

Sources on the campus said the late Dr. Ojediran was rushed to the institution’s clinic immediately he slumped, but he could not make it.

Speaking on the incident, the President, Faculty of Education Students Association of Nigeria, Victor Adesokan, said he was with the deceased lecturer the night before his death, adding that he complained of headache, and appeared very weak.

Adesokan, who complained of inadequate academic personnel in the Faculty, noted that Ojediran’s demise is the fourth death among the lecturers in the Faculty in the outgoing year.

In an interview with Inspiration FM, an Associate Professor in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr. Lawrence Osoba, decried the work load of University lecturers these days.

Dr. Osoba equally said academic staff strength in the university system is grossly inadequate.

Partial Compliance In States As Organized Labour Commences Strike

Day two of the indefinite strike embarked upon by the Organised Labour over the assault on the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero as well as unmet demands by the federal government.

Nineteen unions have so far directed their workers to comply with the directive of the two labour centres, NLC and the Trade Union Congress, TUC. Though compliance on the first day of the industrial action around the country was poor.

Some of the unions fully on board are the Senior Staff Associations of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, PASAN and the Nigeria Union of Railway Workers.

Also, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) wrote to its zonal coordinators and chairpersons to comply with the directives of the national secretariat of the NLC.

Inspiration FM visited the University of Lagos, UNILAG and a lecturer who preferred anonymity, said though they received the memo from ASUU, compliance was poor.

However, the Congress of Nigerian University Academics (CONUA) has said that its members are not part of the ongoing nationwide strike as it was not consulted by the organizing bodies of NLC and TUC.

Commotion As Police Tear Gas Protesting UNILAG Students

On Wednesday, a chaotic scene unfolded as officers of the Nigerian Police Force discharged tear gas in response to students from the University of Lagos (UNILAG) who had gathered to protest against a tuition fee increase.

Initially, the protest seemed peaceful, with students rallying around the school to voice their concerns. However, tensions escalated when police officers, who were present to monitor the students, fired shots.

The day before, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) had warned the Department of State Services (DSS), cautioning against obstructing students from exercising their universally recognized right to protest. NANS argued that the DSS's statement on Monday, suggesting that some politicians were inciting student leaders to violent protests against the Federal Government on socio-economic issues, was mere propaganda. Giwa Temitope, the National Public Relations Officer of the union, confidently asserted that the protest would proceed as planned.

The Lagos State Police Command's Request for Notification Regarding the UNILAG Protest on September 6, 2023"

The Lagos State Police Command has called upon the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) to notify them about their planned protest, scheduled for today, September 6, 2023, at the University of Lagos.

NANS had previously cautioned the Department of State Services (DSS) not to obstruct students' exercise of their right to protest, emphasising that this right is universally recognised as a fundamental human right. On Monday, Giwa Temitope, the National Public Relations Officer of the union, dismissed the DSS's assertion that certain politicians were inciting student leaders to engage in violent protests against the Federal Government on socio-economic issues, deeming it propaganda and confirming that the protest would proceed as planned.

Last week, the Student Solidarity Group Against Fee Hike announced their intention to protest against the fee increase at the University of Lagos on September 6, 2023. Femi Adeyeye, one of the group's leaders, assured the media that the protests would proceed as scheduled, stating, "We're all set, students are ready."

In support of the students, the NANS Public Relations Officer (PRO) issued a statement on Tuesday, declaring the student body's intention to participate in the UNILAG protest and urging the DSS not to infringe upon students' rights. Giwa commented, "It is quite embarrassing that the DSS has veered into being the propaganda arm of the Federal Government, raising false alarms and interfering in matters unrelated to their professional mandate. As an association, we remain dissatisfied with how Nigerian society is managed, particularly regarding arbitrary fee hikes in our tertiary institutions. Therefore, students are encouraged to come out in large numbers and join the protest to demand the immediate reversal of fees at the University of Lagos."

The University of Lagos management had increased fees in July 2023, citing "prevailing economic realities" as the rationale behind the hike. However, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, emphasised that protesting is a fundamental human right, and the police request that students inform them in advance to implement appropriate measures. Hundeyin stated, "The police do not prohibit protesters. It is their inherent right. We only advise them to inform the police so that necessary measures can be taken."
