Ghana, Ivory Coast Administers World’s First Free Covax Covid-19 Jabs

African countries are starting mass Covid19 inoculation drives using vaccines supplied through a scheme set up to share doses fairly with poorer nations.

Ivory Coast is one of the first to benefit from the UN-backed Covax distribution initiative.

Ghana is also launching its vaccination drive this week.

Ghana's President NANA AKUFO-ADDO yesterday became the first to receive a coronavirus vaccine through the scheme.

Mr AKUFO-ADDO urged people to get inoculated and not to believe conspiracy theories casting doubt on the programme, which will see some 600,000 doses of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine rolled out nationwide today.

Myanmar coup: China blocks UN condemnation as protest grows

China has blocked a UN Security Council statement condemning the military coup in Myanmar.

The military took power in the South East Asian nation on Monday after arresting political leader AUNG SAN SUU KYI and hundreds of other lawmakers.

The coup leaders have since formed a supreme council which will sit above the cabinet as signs of resistance and civil disobedience continue to grow.

The United Nations Security Council met on Tuesday but failed to agree on a joint statement after China did not support it. China has the power of veto as one of five permanent members of the council.

SERAP Seeks Intervention Of UN Over The Detention Of The Sowore And Four Others

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) is seeking the intervention of the United Nations over the detention of the convener of #RevolutionNow movement, OMOYELE SOWORE, and four others.

In a statement issued by its deputy director, KOLAWOLE OLUWADARE, the group said it has sent an urgent complaint to the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention over what it called "arbitrary detention and other ill-treatment" SOWORE and the other whom it said were activists for peacefully exercising their human rights.

This comes a day after a Magistrate Court in Abuja ordered their remands at the Kuje Correctional Centre in the nation's capital pending when their formal bail application would be heard today.

They were arraigned by the Federal Government on three charges of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, and an attempt to incite others.
